Modifications Table

Changes to the identifying 'flag' of the sculpture are among the most common of modifications made by Harbour Lights:

HL101 Admiralty Head WA

Misspelled "Admirality" Approximately the first 4,500 of the 5,000 produced.

Corrected to "Admiralty" Approximately the last 500 of the 5,000 produced.

Very rare "Admiralpy" spelling. Only two known at this time.

HL108 Burrows Island WA

When first issued, the state was listed as "OR" for Oregon. Approximately 500 were issued with this error.

Corrected to show state as "WA" for Washington. The balance of 4,500 were issued with the corrected state.

HL124 Split Rock MN

When first issued, the state was identified as "MI" - which stands for Michigan. Approximately 250 with this error were issued.

Corrected flag shows the state as "MN" for Minnesota. Approximately 5,250 were issued with the correct state.

HL161 Highland (Cape Cod) MA

When first issued, the lighthouse name was spelled with an "S" at the end. Locals said the correct name was singular.

The correction was made about mid-way through the total production run of 9,500 pieces.

HL178 Mukilteo WA

The lighthouse name appeared with an extra "L." This error was apparently caught at the factory, but a small number with the error slipped into the shipments. About 12-15 may be all that were sold with this error.

Apparently, communications with the factory about the error were unclear as the error below demonstrates. It is the only one known, but there may be a few others.

Instead of deleting the extra "L", it was changed into a second "U."

Two attempts to correctly spell the name appear:

This is the "flat-bottom 'U'" version. The extra "L" was made into a "U" by adding a vertical stroke. The space where the original "U" appear was made into an "M" and the space where the original "M" appeared was filled in.

This remake of the flag has a "round-bottom 'U'."

Note also the "A" serial number. When produced, it was Harbour Lights plan to introduce this as an open-edition, but before shipment to dealers, it was decided it would be a limited edition. Visit this page for more information about changes from open to limited editoins. CLICK HERE

HL401 Cape Hatteras NC (Open Edition)

In 1994, Harbour Lights introduced a line of 'open-edition' lighthouses. The first such piece was HL401 Cape Hatteras NC. The line was originally called "Great American Lighthouses." However, it was found that this name was already trade-marked and the name of the line was changed to "Great Lighthouses Of the World" (GLOW).

The flag on HL401 with the "A" prefixed serial numbers did not have a © symbol when first issued in 1994.

The copyright notice was added in 1995.

HL402 Boston Harbor MA

If you work for "Harbour Lights," it's probably pretty easy to forget that the correct American spelling is "Harbor." So when Boston Harbor MA was first issued in 1995, the flag read "Boston Harbour."

The spelling was corrected  in 1996.

A few other flags may have had the copyright year changed during the production run. The piece had been planned to be issued in one year, but may have not actually been released to dealers until a year later. Alcatraz CA and Mukilteo WA are known to be in this catagory.
