While not precisely a 'variation,' a few Harbour Lights limited
editions were retired early. Some of these early retirements include
pieces with true variations, others did not. (The complete
shorter-than-planned run all have the same characteristics.)
Burrows Island WA
(HL108) was introduced as one of the
'Original 17' in July 1991 with a planned production run of 5,500. It was
retired three years later in July 1994 after an estimated 2,563 sculptures
had been sold to dealers. The primary reason that it was retired was that
it was not selling well. The actual lighthouse is on a remote island and
is not easily viewed. There were variations among this shorter run based
on the change in production from California to Canada.

Coquille River OR
(HL111), introduced in July 1991 had a
planned edition run of 5,500. Only 1,138 were made when it was noticed by
a collector that the sculpture showed the building as a six-side
structure. The actual lighthouse has eight sides. Harbour Lights decided
to stop production. There were variations among the shortened run based on
the change in production from California to Canada.

Point Arena CA (HL156),
was introduced in Novembe r,
1995 with a planned edition of 5,500. In was retired in April, 1996
because of breakage in shipping. The thin tower and detailed 'eroded
rocks' around the outside of the base were too delicate to survive
shipment. The final count of shipped pieces was approximately 2,500.
However it may be that the actual number of pieces sold without damage was
much smaller. MORE INFO
Chatham MA (HL172), introduced in
April
1996, saw a fairly long production run of 8,032 out of the planned edition
of 9,500, before collectors determined the sculpture was in error. The
actual lighthouse had been moved in the past from one side of the road to
the other. In doing so, the building was not rotated, but simply pulled
across. This meant the 'front' of the building in its original position
became the 'back' in the new location. The Harbour Lights sculpture had
the roof reversed. The front of the lighthouse had three dormers; the
sculpture showed these three dormers on the front.
