Since 1991, Harbour Lights has had lighthouses cast and painted in four countries: The United States, Canada, Malaysia, and China.

Only the first 250 of each of the 'Original 17' (1991 Introductions) were made in California. Production was then shifted to Castle Studios in Ontario, Canada,  (The original Cape Hatteras was retired and replaced with a revised sculpture in this transition.)

All of the original 17 plus 9 of the 1992 Introductions were made with lightning rods. Rods were made of wire and later out of bristle. Of the 26 lighthouses with lightning rods, only Cape Hatteras (both versions) and Coquille River had the full production run made with rods. Lightning rods were discontinued over time.

The tables below summarize the countries of origin and which lighthouses had some or all of the production made with lightning rods.

  • X = Made in that country
  • R = Made with lightning rod
  • N = Made with no lightning rod

For example "X R/N" under Malaysia means that Admiralty Head WA was made in Malaysia both with a rod and without a rod. The "X R" under Canada it indicates that it was also made in Canada and all Canadian pieces included a lightning rod.

1991 Introductions - 'The Original 17'
Production began in Southern California on the 'Original 17' products introduced in 1991. Late in the year, production on all the items was shifted to Castle Studios in Ontario, Canada. Before the entire production run was completed on most of the 1991 introductions, production had shifted again to Malaysia.

1992 Introductions
Production continued at White Castle Studios in Ontario Canada as 1992 products were introduced. Before the entire runs were done, however, production was shifted to Malaysia.

1994 Introductions
Production continued in Malaysia on the limited editions. The very first open edition (GLOW) HL401 Cape Hatteras NC was the first product made in China.

1996 Introductions
During 1996, production on six lighthouses was shifted from Malaysia to China (shown by gray shading in the table below and one in the 1995 table above.). Some changes were made in the sculpting when the shift was made.

All made in China except Grand Traverse MI which started production in Malaysia was transferred to China during the year.
