Since the earliest French explorers
first navigated the hazardous Straits of Mackinac, mariners have treated this narrow
stretch of water with the utmost respect. In 1892, a 40-foot castle-like sentinel was
erected near Mackinac City, lighting the path of the countless vessels that pass through
these waters between Lakes Michigan and Huron. Retired from service in 1957, this graceful
old building will serve the public as a maritime museum in the future.
